The situation regarding the Patagonian sanitary barrier is far from calming down, and proposes a new level of conflict between national authorities and Patagonian producers. The relaxation of the sanitary barrier drawn in Patagonia has left southern ranchers under conditions they consider harmful. After several back-and-forths, and with a mechanism suspected of favoring some very important refrigeration groups in the south, the national government arranged the relaxation of the barrier, allowing bone-in roast to enter south of the Colorado River, something that was not previously permitted. The measure undermined years of protection, since Patagonia enjoys foot-and-mouth disease-free status without vaccination, unlike what occurs north of the limit, where animals must be vaccinated.
