India has become the world's largest exporter of gherkins and cucumbers, with exports amounting to 1,23,846 Metric Tonnes valued at USD 114 million from April to October 2020-21. The country also exceeded USD 200 million in exports of agricultural processed products in the same financial year. The Department of Commerce and the Agricultural & Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) have implemented initiatives to boost infrastructure, promotion, and adherence to food safety management systems. Gherkin cultivation, processing, and exports in India began in the early 1990s and currently benefit around 90,000 small and marginal farmers. Gherkins are exported to over 20 countries and the industry is significant for rural employment. APEDA supports the industry through financial assistance for infrastructure development and quality enhancement.
