The ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) is planning to boost mariculture activities across India's coastal states, identifying 146 potential sites for sea cage farming with a production potential of 2.13 million tonnes per year. The institute has also identified 342 sites for seaweed farming with a production potential of 9.7 million tonnes per year. The technology for sea cage farming and integrated multi-trophic aquaculture (IMTA) has been successful for income multiplication and employment empowerment among the coastal population. A 21-day Winter School has been launched to popularise these technologies and train researchers.
