India has permitted limited onion exports to countries including Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Mauritius, Bahrain, Bhutan, and Nepal on a Government-to-Government basis. This decision comes after a ban on onion exports from December 2023 to March 2024 due to increased domestic prices and shortages caused by severe weather conditions damaging crops. The ban had resulted in a significant rise in onion prices in neighboring countries and protests by onion farmers in Maharashtra, India's primary onion-producing region.
