The Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution in India announced record sugarcane production of over 5,000 Lakh Metric Tons during the 2021-22 sugar season, making the country the world's largest producer and consumer of sugar, and the second largest exporter after Brazil. The government's introduction of the Minimum Selling Price (MSP) of sugar and financial support have aided the sugar industry's recovery from financial distress. In the 2021-22 season, sugar mills procured sugarcane worth over 1.18 lakh crore and fully repaid 1.15 lakh crore of the payment, with only 2,300 crores in unpaid cane dues. The government's efforts to promote ethanol production from sugar and export surplus sugar have contributed to the sector's self-sufficiency. Ethanol sales generated over 20,000 crore in revenue and aided in prompt cane duty clearance for farmers.
