India is importing sorghum from the United States due to a shortage of feed grains and a ban on genetically modified organisms. The US Grains Council is promoting US sorghum for various uses in India, including human consumption, starch production, animal feed, and ethanol production. Sorghum, which yields higher starch than Indian corn and is suitable for ethanol production, aligns with India's goal to add 20% ethanol to fuel by 2025/2026. Its low water and fertilizer requirements and low carbon emissions also support India's sustainable development goals.
