Over 1,000 chickens in the eastern Indian state of Odisha have been culled due to an outbreak of the H5N1 strain of avian influenza, or bird flu. The outbreak, located in the Puri district, has prompted plans to cull an additional 18,000 birds. The H5N1 strain is highly pathogenic and can spread to other animals and humans, potentially leading to significant losses in livestock, trade restrictions, and human transmission.
