The article outlines the successful negotiation of sustainable fishing rules for tropical tunas in the Eastern Pacific Ocean from 2022 to 2024 by the Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission (IATTC), a body known for its integration of science and fisheries policy. These rules aim to ensure the sustainability of tunas (bigeye, yellowfin, and skipjack) and reduce the number of floating objects. The rules also focus on improving fishery control, surveillance, and monitoring to prevent damage to the interdependent biomass. Peruvian President of the IATTC, Alfonso Miranda Eyzaguirre, emphasized the science-based approach and the use of the precautionary approach in formulating these rules. The commission will develop advanced management tools over the next three years to improve knowledge and analysis for the benefit, conservation, and sustainability of these species.
