Italy is planning to kill one million wild boars over the next three to five years with military assistance, in order to reduce their population by 60 to 80 percent due to the spread of African swine fever (ASF). This initiative is in response to the threat posed to pig producers, particularly in the Parma region, where the virus could lead to significant economic losses for the Parma ham industry, which generates around EUR 1.7 billion in revenue annually. Authorities and stakeholders, including farmers, exporters, economists, and gourmets, are advocating for increased biosecurity funding and the involvement of more hunters to control the wild boar population and prevent the virus from affecting pig farms. The military's role will be to support the depopulation of wild boars, highlighting the serious nature of the situation and the urgent need for action to protect both the wildlife and the pig farming industry.
