The latest household budget survey released by Japan's Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications has shown a significant shift in eating habits due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The ratio of household meals to consumption expenditure has reached a record high of 24.3%, the highest since 2000, as people have been eating out less and cooking more at home to save money. Total expenditure for May decreased by 16.2%, with a 59.9% drop in eating out, while in-house meal expenses increased by 16.6%. There was also a noticeable increase in the sales of fresh meat, pork, chicken, and fresh vegetables, with demand for home-made pickles and an increase in the consumption of main cooked foods like frozen fried rice and noodles.
