(Jeju=Yonhap News) Reporter Kim Ho-cheon = The first integrated brand for Jeju garlic will be developed and actively marketed starting this year.

The Jeju Garlic Export Council, composed of local garlic-exporting agricultural cooperatives, including Daejeong Agricultural Cooperative, Hamdeok Agricultural Cooperative, Jeju Gosan Agricultural Cooperative, Gimnyeong Agricultural Cooperative, the Jeju branch of the Agricultural Cooperatives Economic Corporation, and the Jeju Agricultural Cooperatives Vegetable Joint Business Corporation, announced on the 19th that they have developed the integrated brand "Jeju Mawang" for Jeju garlic.

The council, which was launched in August to stabilize the distribution of Jeju garlic and promote joint branding, finalized the integrated brand and character design, which means "King of Jeju Garlic," and filed for a trademark.

The brand and character emphasize the robust flavor of garlic grown in Jeju's volcanic soil with clean volcanic rock water.

Jeju garlic, which is mostly used for kimchi during the kimchi-making season, has a strong flavor, while the garlic grown in mainland regions is less spicy and is often used for grilling.

Accordingly, the Jeju Vegetable Joint Business Corporation is pushing for extensive marketing targeting major retailers and food service companies, including E-Mart, during the peak kimchi-making season under the Jeju Mawang brand.

This year, the garlic production in Jeju is 13,130 tons, of which about 49%, or 6,401 tons, was purchased by eight local agricultural cooperatives.

The four agricultural cooperatives participating in the council will distribute 5,448 tons (85%) of the purchased amount as peeled garlic, while the remaining four agricultural cooperatives will distribute it as unpeeled garlic.

Park Jin-seon, the CEO of the Jeju Vegetable Joint Business Corporation, said, "Jeju Mawang is a meaningful achievement where the Export Council has united the value of Jeju garlic into one brand," and added, "Starting from the kimchi-making season, we will strengthen marketing to enhance the competitiveness of Jeju's garlic industry and increase farmers' income."

This year, the total domestic garlic production is 310,000 tons (271,000 tons for mainland-grown garlic and 39,000 tons for island-grown garlic).

Mainland-grown garlic is further divided into Daeseong-type and Namdo-type, and only Namdo-type is produced in Jeju. This year, the total production of Namdo-type garlic is 80,000 tons, of which Jeju accounts for about 16%.
