[Korea Agricultural and Fishery Newspaper, Reporter Kang Jae-nam] The Jeju Special Self-Governing Province Agricultural Technology Institute (Director Koh Sang-hwan) announced that it will fully expand the cultivation of the new broccoli variety 'Samda Green', which has high yield and strong disease resistance and is well-suited to Jeju's climate. According to the agricultural technology institute, the broccoli cultivation area and production in the Jeju region are 1,262 hectares and 16,401 tons as of 2023, accounting for about 70% of the national cultivation area, with winter cultivation from January to February being the main focus, which is difficult to produce in mainland regions. However, since domestic seed companies have not developed varieties suitable for winter cultivation, 99% of seeds are dependent on overseas sources. As a result, annual seed costs amount to 20 billion won.
