Victoria's kangaroo population has seen a significant increase, reaching almost two million, which has resulted in a 39% rise in the harvesting quotas for 2021, totaling 95,680 kangaroos. This surplus meat will now be available for human consumption, a change from previous years when it was only used for pet food. The government also intends to explore export opportunities for roo skins. The program, which employs trained professional shooters, is designed to mitigate the competition between kangaroos and livestock for food and resources, as well as the damage they cause to crops and fences. Other Australian states like South Australia, Queensland, and New South Wales also implement similar quotas for kangaroo harvesting, with quotas set based on aerial surveys and ranging from 10% to 20% of the estimated population size.
