Glynn Tonsor, a Kansas State University professor of agricultural economics, discussed the current state of the beef industry at the 2022 KSU Beef Stocker Field Day. He highlighted the resilience of beef demand, both domestically and internationally, despite early pandemic concerns. However, Tonsor warned that potential economic headwinds could threaten this demand. He also discussed the effects of drought on reducing the domestic cattle herd, which is expected to result in less beef production in the next two to four years, supporting higher cattle prices as long as demand remains steady. Tonsor stressed the importance of cattle producers being aware of global issues such as inflation and the increasing costs of running a herd.
