A report by Kyodo news agency and the Environmental Justice Foundation (EJF) has uncovered claims that Japanese stores are selling seafood caught by Chinese vessels, which use illegal fishing methods and violate human rights of workers. The issue is part of the global problem of IUU fishing and unfair competition for companies that comply with regulations. The EJF interviewed over 70 Indonesian fishermen who worked on 19 Chinese tuna vessels, reporting forced labor, abuse, and shark finning. The findings have raised concerns about Japan's lack of control over seafood imports, in contrast to the US and EU. However, Mitsubishi Corp, a Japanese trading company allegedly involved, maintains that its tuna transactions comply with international rules and that it has not illegally fished or violated human rights since April 2020.
