The European Union (EU) is facing a challenge in Latin America's agricultural export market, especially due to its shift towards China and the impact of US tariffs. Spain, which has potential opportunities in selling value-added or Denomination of Origin products in the region, is also wary of the potential threats to its livestock and citrus sectors from the pending Mercosur pact. Meanwhile, the International Technical Specialist from the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA), Joaquín Arias, views these agreements as a means to promote safe and predictable trade. The pandemic has notably influenced Latin American agricultural exports, with Brazil, Chile, and Venezuela seeing increases in exports to Spain. Despite a slight decline in overall EU food exports to Latin America from January to April, there was a growth in sales to Brazil.
