Latvian farmers are experiencing significant losses due to the failure to harvest tons of strawberries, cherries, and blueberries, as there is a shortage of migrant workers, particularly Ukrainians, to assist with the harvest. The lack of labor is compounded by the COVID-19 pandemic, which has led to entry restrictions for foreign workers. Local residents are not interested in berry picking as it often pays less than unemployment benefits. Farm owners are planning to request the government to relax entry conditions for Ukrainian migrant workers.
