In 2020, Peru's legume exports reached US $ 82 million, covering 45 international markets as reported by the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation (Midagri). These legumes, including varieties such as beans, broad beans, peas, pallar, lentils, tarwi, chickpea, among others, are cultivated across approximately 200,000 hectares, leading to an average annual production of 272,000 tons. This industry is vital for thousands of small farmers who contribute to the sector's success. Notably, Peru has developed over 30 genetically enhanced legume varieties, which are more yielding, adaptable, and pest/disease resistant, benefiting around 140,000 farmer families by enhancing the quality and competitiveness of their crops.
