Thailand's Department of Livestock Development is urging for a shift towards humane farming practices and reduced antibiotic use in the country's pig industry, in response to global concerns over animal welfare and drug resistance. This push includes the development of a mandatory animal welfare standard for larger pig farms, efforts to control antibiotic use through prescription requirements and a 30% reduction target in animal drug use by 2021. The department is also implementing measures to monitor and combat drug-resistant organisms, with support from other agencies such as the Pollution Control Department and the Department of Medical Sciences.
