Malaysia is currently grappling with a significant domestic rice shortage, primarily attributed to adverse weather conditions that have disrupted harvests and supply chains, leaving the country without domestic rice inventory for six months. The situation is exacerbated by the fact that only 15 out of 100 domestic rice sales points are able to offer rice at the government-regulated price, which is deemed too low amidst the high demand and scarcity. The Ministry of Agriculture and Food, under Mohamad Sabu's leadership, is open to collaborating with the Competition Commission to explore potential monopolistic practices in the rice market, following allegations of supply manipulation by certain groups, as claimed by opposition parties and NGOs.
