In October 2023, Malaysia began exporting its jackfruit to China, but due to higher costs compared to Thai and Vietnamese jackfruit, it has not been able to command a premium in the market. To differentiate itself, Malaysia is looking to export the nangchem variety, a hybrid of cempedak and jackfruit, to China. The nangchem fruit is known for its thicker, sweeter, and juicier flesh, and trees can be harvested after just 2.5 to 3 years with high yields. However, the fruit is more prone to rot, and currently, only frozen flesh is exported to Japan. The key to exporting fresh nangchem fruit lies in the development of technology for its transportation.
