The refrigerated sector has experienced a rebound in 2024, driven by healthy harvests in the southern hemisphere and expected to continue growing throughout the year. This follows two years of decline. The growth is attributed to improved deciduous exports, with South Africa's citrus season expected to further boost growth. New Zealand's kiwi fruit crop is also expected to be good. Major seaborne trade in chilled products has also seen positive growth. Falling reefer freight rates, due to shipping lines adjusting rates following pandemic disruptions, are supporting this growth. Despite challenges at the Panama Canal, container shipping has remained resilient. Drewry predicts a continued decline in freight rates for refrigerated container shipping and an increase in global reefer volume in 2024.
