Mentan Aims for Self-Sufficiency in White Sugar by 2026, Indonesia Ready to be an Exporter Again

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Minister of Agriculture Andi Amran Sulaiman said the government targets self-sufficiency in white sugar by 2026. Amran explained that the program to revitalize sugarcane and build sugar factories is aimed at making Indonesia a sugar exporter again, similar to the 1930s era. He conveyed that this step is part of a major downstream processing program in the agricultural sector being worked on across ministries and agencies, in line with President Prabowo Subianto's directives. In the initial phase, the government is preparing a large investment in the plantation, livestock, horticulture, and food sectors with a total value reaching Rp371 trillion. "We target self-sufficiency in white sugar next year.
