In 2023, Mexico emerged as the world leader in tomato exports, with a record value of US$2,988 million, surpassing the Netherlands and Spain. The United States was the primary market, receiving 99.8% of these exports. Despite facing an 8% decrease in production due to drought conditions in 2022, Mexico expects a 2% increase in tomato production in 2024, totaling 3.30 million tons. The country's leadership in tomato exports, which it has held since 2016, is attributed to its robust production sector, despite climate and water challenges. Sinaloa is the leading tomato-producing state, contributing 22% to the national production. Mexico produces a diverse range of tomato varieties, including cherry, ball, and saladette, and is extending its growing and harvesting season to accommodate more production weeks.
