The Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission has increased the catch limits for Pacific bluefin tuna, allowing US commercial vessels to harvest 80% more fish in 2025-2026. This decision, made after the tuna stock was found to be rebuilt a decade ahead of schedule, is expected to benefit both commercial fishermen and recreational anglers in Southern California. However, efforts will be made for consistent management of sport fishing. The US harvested 368 metric tons of Pacific bluefin tuna in 2022, and with the increased catch limit, more tuna is expected to be available for the US market. The challenge now is to rebuild markets and educate consumers about the improved status of the Pacific bluefin tuna population.
