The Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation (Midagri) of Peru has registered 3,029 small producer organizations to supply food for social programs, as part of the Law of State Purchases of Food of Origin in Family Farming. These organizations specialize in the production of a variety of crops and dairy products. The government is committing to source at least 30% of its food purchases from these small farmers by 2024. The aim is to strengthen family farming through market access, improved productivity, and technical assistance, despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. These small farmers currently supply 70% of the food consumed in Peru.
