More than twenty species of algae added to the EU New Food Catalog

As noted in the note, under the EU Novel Food Regulation, if a species or food additive is considered novel, prior marketing authorization is required before it can be sold. However, if it can be demonstrated that a species or additive was used in food in the EU before 15 May 1997, the product is no longer considered new and therefore prior marketing authorization is not considered necessary. The seaweed species recently added to the Catalog have been shown to have a history of use as a food source in the EU and therefore when seaweed producers bring any of the species now listed to market they will not have to obtain prior marketing authorization.
