Within the past nine months alone, Morocco has surpassed its entire onion export volume from the previous year, reaching over 65,000 tons. This represents a significant six-fold increase over the past five years, positioning Morocco as one of the leading onion exporters globally. The data from East-Fruit reveals that onions are the third most exported vegetable following tomatoes and peppers. The destination countries for these exports have shifted, with the Netherlands' share dropping to 6% compared to the 33% it once held, while Senegal, Mauritania, and Mali have emerged as the primary recipients, accounting for 16%, 26%, and 28% of the exports, respectively. This surge in onion exports is particularly crucial as it addresses the food requirements of the Sahel region, which is currently grappling with famine.
