The European Commission has recently granted Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) status to the Hungarian rice variety, Nagykun. This designation aims to protect the name and the quality of the rice, which is grown under specific Hungarian soil conditions and cultivation techniques near Kisújszállás. The PGI status signifies that Nagykun rice meets strict quality standards and has low heavy metal contents, making it suitable for infant and young children's food. Geographical indications like Nagykun rice can contribute significantly to the economy, with over 15% of the EU's food and drink exports being GI products, which are typically twice the price of non-GI products.
