REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA — The Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) recorded national salt production, both from traditional salt ponds and businesses, to reach around 1 million tons by 2025. Director of Marine Resources Directorate General of Marine Management KKP Frista Yorhanita said the figure is a decrease compared to the previous year due to weather factors, especially the high intensity of rainfall that affects the salt formation process. “Current national production is still around 2 million tons per year, while the needs reach 4.5 to 5 million tons. Therefore, we still import around 2.6 to 3 million tons per year, mainly for industrial needs,” she said in a press conference in Jakarta, Tuesday (30/12/2025). She acknowledged that the decrease in salt production this year is a particular challenge in efforts to achieve the self-sufficiency target by 2027.
