Bulgarian vegetable growers are protesting for more government support, representing between 20-23 thousand producers but potentially employing over 200,000 people, including seasonal workers. They argue that the sector, which relies heavily on manual labor, has been severely diminished by a decrease in cultivation areas for various crops over the past 20 years. The National Union of Gardeners' president, Mariana Miltenova, points out an unfair distribution of financial support in 2014 and calls for a fairer allocation to prevent the ongoing destruction of the sector. Growers are seeking subsidies for fertilizers and preparations, tax policy adjustments, and a reduction in VAT, as they face a significant increase in production costs and many have ceased cultivation due to underfunding and the impact of high gas prices.
