The Netherlands' Eastern Scheldt lobster fishery is experiencing unexplained structural decline of the European Lobster, prompting concerns and the need for sustainable management strategies. The Association of Professional Fishers Oosterschelde, Westschelde and Voordelta (OWV) has developed a fishing plan and has received funding from the European Maritime and Fisheries Funds (EMFF) to implement 'LobStAR', a project aimed at improving stock assessments through scientific innovations. The project includes conducting experiments to monitor lobster growth, reproduction, and mortality, testing an automatic catch monitoring system called CatchCam, and developing a stock assessment model in collaboration with fishers. The findings of this project are expected to be valuable in managing the region's marine resources sustainably.
