Research scientists at CSIR-SARI-Wa in Ghana's Upper West region are working to transform the area into a major onion production hub by introducing high-yielding onion varieties 'Idol' and 'Texas' tropical. The initiative aims to involve local peasant farmers, particularly women, in adopting Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) to enhance production, reduce reliance on imports from Burkina Faso and Niger, and potentially enter the global market. The project focuses on educating farmers about sustainable practices, soil testing, and crop budgeting, with the goal of improving the financial status of local farmers and positioning the region as a leading onion producer and exporter.
