Researchers at Western University in Canada, led by Professor Joshua Pearce and the Free Appropriate Sustainable Technology (FAST) research group, have developed a net-zero energy vertical farm using the Agrotunnel system and advanced solar panels. Funded by a $1 million grant, the project aims to grow berries year-round and improve yield stability amidst climate change. The system, which includes high-density aeroponic and hydroponic systems, agrivoltaic panels, and AI monitoring, is modular, scalable, and adaptable to various locations. Strawberries and other berries grown in this system will be monitored under different solar cell intensities to optimize growth. This innovation is expected to transform sustainable food production in Canada and potentially globally.
