The General Administration of Customs of China has permitted the import of fresh soft-fleshed kiwifruit, also known as kiwiberries, from New Zealand, effective June 25. Kiwiberries, which are native to China and have a sweet tropical fruit flavor, were previously banned from China due to not meeting the country's entry quarantine requirements. New Zealand is expected to be the primary exporter of these kiwiberries to China, bypassing France which was the initial country allowed to export. Additionally, New Zealand kiwiberries are not required to undergo cold treatment, whereas French kiwiberries must be cold-treated. Chinese orchards exporting kiwiberries to China must adhere to good agricultural practices and comprehensive pest control. The import of any batch of kiwiberries found to contain quarantine pests or not meet China's national food safety standards will be returned, destroyed, or treated.
