Nicaragua's sugar production expected to be stable in 2022/23

Despite political instability in Nicaragua, the country's sugar production is expected to remain stable in 2022/23, with an estimated total of 780,000 tonnes, according to the USDA attaché. This stability is attributed to investments in mechanization, irrigation, and cogeneration of electricity. However, the report also highlights potential negative factors for sugarcane production, including access difficulties and high prices of fertilizers and fuels. The harvest is estimated to be around 7.2 million tons, similar to the previous season, and domestic consumption is expected to slightly increase to 285 thousand tons. However, sugar exports are predicted to decrease from 500 thousand tons to approximately 495 thousand tons for 2022/23.
