In 2023, Nigerian ginger farmers faced a devastating ginger blight disease epidemic, resulting in N12 billion in losses and the destruction of over 90% of their harvest. Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, Aliyu Abdullahi, highlighted the critical role of agricultural insurance, which allowed insured farmers to receive compensation and continue farming, unlike their uninsured peers. With 51% of Nigeria's farming areas at risk of flooding in 2024 due to climate change, the government plans to incorporate agricultural insurance into the National Agricultural Growth Scheme Agro-Pocket (NAGS-AP) programme to promote sustainability and food security.
