NOAA Fisheries has found that four species of West Coast salmon and steelhead trout should continue to be classified as threatened under the Endangered Species Act (ESA). This decision was made after a five-year review of their recovery progress. The four species are Southern Oregon/Northern California coast coho salmon, California coastal chinook salmon, Central California coast steelhead, and California Central Valley steelhead. The agency credited habitat restoration for addressing the major factors limiting these species and preventing local extinction. However, it also noted that habitat loss and degradation, and the effects of climate change remain significant challenges to their recovery. The agency highlighted the planned removal of four dams along the Klamath River as a crucial step for helping Southern Oregon/Northern California coast coho salmon, and the removal of two dams along the Eel River as beneficial for California coastal chinook salmon.
