Areca nut exports from Vietnam have seen a significant surge, with the first nine months of the year witnessing a doubling of exports compared to the same period last year, reaching a value of nearly 29 million USD. China continues to be the largest market, importing areca nuts worth nearly 27.3 million USD, followed by the US, Thailand, Nepal, India, Sri Lanka, and Bhutan. The increase in exports is largely due to a supply shortage in China caused by a storm in Hainan Island. However, the price increase is not sustainable, and the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association recommends growers to intercrop areca nuts with other crops to mitigate risk. The areca nut market is currently disorganized, with prices fluctuating. Despite the market's confusion, some farmers are optimistic about the future income from areca nut plantations.
