Statistics Korea's first quarter livestock trend survey for 2024 reports a decline in mammal livestock including Korean and beef cattle, dairy cows, and pigs, while poultry numbers have increased. Korean beef cattle numbers have decreased by 141,000 and 157,000 in the year and quarter respectively, due to lower breeding intentions and fewer heifers. Dairy cow numbers have also decreased by 3,000 in the year and 5,000 in the quarter. Pig numbers have decreased by 117,000 in the year and 95,000 in the quarter. Laying hen numbers have increased by 2.348 million in the year but decreased by 1.17 million in the quarter. Broiler chicken numbers have increased by 4,969,000 in the year but decreased by 294,000 in the quarter. Duck numbers have increased by 1,226,000 in the year but decreased by 490,000 in the quarter, likely due to a significant decrease in highly pathogenic avian influenza cases.
