Morocco is set to begin its winter octopus fishing season on January 1, with initial predictions showing a positive outlook. The country, along with Mauritania, is a major supplier of octopus to the European Union and the UK. The price of octopus in the EU and the US has surged in recent months. At a recent meeting in Rabat, Morocco, the Octopus Fisheries Monitoring Committee discussed the improved resource status of octopus and other cephalopods off the Moroccan coast and focused on solutions to industry challenges. The country is implementing sustainable fishing practices through the 'Halieutis' strategic framework and plans to establish three committees to develop regulations for sustainable fishing gear management, regional demarcation, and the professionalization of fishing vessels.
