France has successfully vaccinated ducks against highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) over the past year, following a series of major bird flu crises that led to millions of bird culls and significant economic loss. A poultry industry vaccination group was formed in 2022, and a steering committee in 2023 implemented a mandatory preventative vaccination for all flocks of over 250 ducks, starting in October 2023. The vaccination, co-funded by the State and the duck industry, has been effective in reducing outbreaks, with 45.7 million ducks vaccinated in the first 10 months and all samples taken during active and passive surveillance being negative for HPAI. However, the vaccination has led to trade issues with five countries banning French poultry imports. Additionally, a promising vaccine technology for layers has been developed, preventing virus transmission in recent experiments.
