A collaborative effort is underway to update the 1976 Ordinance Mapa No. 846, which governs the classification and standardization of Brazil nuts, an essential source of income for communities in the Amazon region engaged in extractivism. This initiative, led by the Observatório da Castanha-da-Amazônia (OCA) network and involving stakeholders such as Embrapa, Unir, Mapa, MDA, Ecoporé, GIZ, companies, and civil society organizations, aims to revise the ordinance to better reflect the current realities of the Brazil nut market. The process, scheduled from April to July, will include thematic meetings and field visits to discuss updates on concepts, classification parameters, and labeling, with the goal of simplifying the standard and encouraging self-regulation within the industry.
