Perspective for export of Dutch celeriac

The vegetable seed company organized their first Celeriac Day on Tuesday, December 12. During this day, attention was paid to market developments and challenges in cultivation. The Celeriac Day took place at Van Peperstraten Group in Oude-Tonge, South Holland. Area crop manager Geert van Diepen of Bejo Zaden gave a look at the market opportunities for celeriac. He shows that the celeriac area in the European Union has declined considerably since 2018. That year, 14,150 hectares of this vegetable grew in the European Union, according to figures from Eurostat and Statistics Netherlands (CBS). In 2022, 12,110 hectares remained. On the other hand, the decline in production is less rapid. In 2018, 432,000 tons of celeriac were produced, and 429,000 tons in 2022. “This means that arable farmers have started growing more efficiently,” Van Diepen notes.
