Peru's Minister of Agriculture, Miranda Eyzaguirre, is optimistic about the potential growth of the country's fishing sector for human consumption in 2023, with the enactment of Law No. 31666 and increased investments. Despite economic uncertainties, over 35 million dollars were invested in the sector in 2022, with plans to formalize artisanal fishing and expand scientific cruises. The minister also called for regulating squid fishing by Chinese vessels to prevent unfair competition. The giant squid, contributing 40% of the value of fishery exports in 2022, is a key employment generator. The sector is on track to reach 4,000 million dollars in exports in 2023.
