The international onion market has seen a surge in demand and a decrease in supply due to adverse weather conditions, leading to a global shortage and higher prices. Several countries have imposed tariffs on onion exports to control the price in their local markets, except for Peru. Despite a limited production, Peru has seen a 14% growth in volume and a 51% increase in value in its onion exports from January to June. The country has benefited from the high prices in the international market and is likely to see an 8% growth in volume and a nearly 30% increase in value in its exports by the end of the year. Other countries like the US, Mexico, India, and Egypt have faced challenges in producing and exporting onions, leading to a further increase in demand for Peruvian onions.
