The Brazilian pork sector experienced a challenging year in 2022, marked by a decline in external demand and a surge in production, leading to an oversupply of meat in the domestic market and putting downward pressure on prices. Despite setting a monthly record for meat exports in August, with 114.6 thousand tons, the total export volume for the year fell by 3.6% compared to 2021, according to Secex. Concurrently, domestic pork demand was weaker than anticipated due to high inflation and reduced purchasing power, while production figures hit a record high, with 42.2 million pigs slaughtered between January and September, a 6.6% increase from the same period in the previous year, as reported by IBGE.
