A drill was conducted at a Kenyan banana plantation to prepare for potential outbreaks of Fusarium tropical race 4 (RT4), a highly destructive fungus. The exercise, funded by the European Commission and organized by the Kenya Plant Health Inspection Service, the FAO, and COMESA, involved setting up a quarantine zone, defining containment strategies, and developing a contingency plan. It also included training on sampling and destroying infected plants, maintaining biosecurity, and communicating analysis results. The drill is part of ongoing global efforts to combat RT4, a fungus that is persistent in soil and can spread through contaminated equipment, water, or plant material, and is of particular concern due to its potential impact on banana and plantain crops, which are grown in 135 countries and provide food security for over 400 million people.
