Tridge summary

The article highlights a significant increase in the prices of staple foods such as rice, beans, maize, and groundnuts in the Upper East Region's market centers, particularly in Bolgatanga, during the first quarter of 2021. This surge in prices is attributed to farmers' preference for selling their produce directly to middlemen for higher profits rather than to market women. The high demand from a neighboring beer factory in Burkina Faso has also contributed to the rising prices of maize and guinea corn. The article also points out the challenges of smuggling of fertilizers for the Planting for Food and Jobs initiative, poor rainfall, and the distribution of fertilizers, with a call for government intervention to address these issues and prevent further increase in food prices.
