The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development in Mexico announced the availability of a diverse supply of prickly pears for the coming season, from July to September, covering 16 states and covering an area of 45,140 hectares. Despite 97.3% of production being done temporarily, the industry saw an increase in production in 2020, reaching 471,427 tons, with significant contributions from the States of Mexico, Puebla, and Zacatecas. Mexico's prickly pear production is not only self-sufficient but also has a trade history, with exports reaching 22,793 tons in 2020 to countries like the US, Chile, and the UAE. The fruit is valued for its nutritional benefits, including fiber, vitamins, minerals, and proteins, and is used in various food and beverage products. Recent research has also highlighted its potential in treating diabetes due to its unique ability to enhance insulin use, adding to its health benefits.
